Paraprofessionals
Extra-contracted Days and Inservice Days for Paraprofessionals
All IU1 Paraprofessionals
- In-service days and extra contracted days are not the same. In-service days cannot be counted as an extra contracted day.
- If you have questions regarding in-service days consult your supervisor.
- Look for appropriate workshops for your needs and interests on the IU1 website by clicking on the “Courses & SolutionWhere” link on the homepage. Paraprofessionals must register for workshops and can do so by using SolutionWhere. If registration help is needed please contact Charlotte Diehl, ISS secretary at 724 938-3241 ext. 212 or diehlc@iu1.k12.pa.us.
IU1 Paraprofessionals in Year 1, 2, or 3 Years of Service
- Newly hired IU paraprofessionals are required to complete 15 extra contracted professional development days by the end of their first three years of employment (based on date of hire).
- It is strongly recommended that paraprofessionals complete an average of five extra contracted days each year (based on date of hire) towards the required 15 extra contracted days in three years (based on date of hire).
- At the completion of the third year of employment (based on date of hire) paraprofessionals must have completed all required 15 extra contracted days.
- Failure to complete these days by the end of your third year (based on date of hire) is a violation of the paraprofessional contract and may lead to dismissal from your job.
- Intermediate Unit 1 workshops designed for paraprofessionals are listed on SolutionWhere and begin with the word “Aides” and end with the words “for Extra Contracted Days”. Workshops developed by IU1 are provided at no-cost to the IU1 paraprofessional. If there are any material fees, these are the responsibility of the paraprofessional.
- Supervisors may request that a Continuing Professional Education (CPE) session be made available for paraprofessionals. This request must be emailed to Keith Golebie and Jarol DeVoge. For course sessions approved for extra-contracted days, paraprofessionals must sign up for the aide section of the course and they are responsible for material fees.
- Important: Paraprofessionals cannot take the same workshop twice, face to face or online, for an extra contracted day. It will only be counted once.
- Paraprofessionals are paid their hourly rate for attending these workshops and must complete the appropriate form to receive payment. Forms can be obtained from Charlotte Diehl. Completed pay forms should be submitted to Charlotte Diehl.
- Paraprofessionals can take the extra contracted day workshops at IU1, online through IU1, or PaTTAN on Saturday, during the evenings, or after school during the school year or any day in the summer that is not a scheduled workday.
- For a listing or to register for PaTTAN Paraeducator After-School Videoconferences, go to the PaTTAN website. On the PaTTAN homepage, select Supporting Students, Paraeducators.
- It is the responsibility of the paraprofessional to provide IU1 with a copy of their PaTTAN transcript, or a copy of the training certificate, to receive credit towards extra contracted days for any training done at PaTTAN.
- If you have questions about extra contracted days please contact Charlotte Diehl at 724-938-3241 ext. 212 or diehlc@iu1.k12.pa.us or Su Verma at 724-938-3241 ext. 268 or vermas@iu1.k12.pa.us.
IU1 Paraprofessionals With More Than Three Years of Service
- Paraprofessionals employed longer than three years with IU1 may take workshops and courses for in-service only with the approval of their supervisor. IU1 pays the tuition for these workshops or courses but the paraprofessional does not receive additional payment for their time.
