Autism Support Services
Autism Consultant
The role of the lead support teacher for autism is a relatively new position for Team 7. Due to the increasing numbers of students being diagnosed within the autism spectrum disorder, school districts are continually facing the challenges of how to best serve these students within the least restrictive environment. In order to assist districts with these responsibilities, the position of a lead support teacher for autism was created.
Team 7's autism consultant is available to work with all districts in IU1. Roles and responsibilities include providing consultative services to teachers, paraprofessionals, administrators, and parents. The LST works closely with the Watson consultants when necessary, attends IEP team meetings, provides materials preparation, facilitates the use of environmental strategies, communication strategies, assistive technology and conducts disability specific trainings - all with the goal of ensuring that best practices in the field of autism are utilized when providing services to these students.
