Caitlyn Baird Receives Lucia D. Scarvel Award
The Lucia D. Scarvel Memorial Scholarship was presented to Caity Baird, Class of 2009 from Canon-McMillan School District. This scholarship is presented annually in memory of Lucia Scarvel who spent nearly four decades in the field of education as a supervisor of speech and hearing with Intermediate Unit 1. The scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who has received services through Intermediate Unit 1's Department of Communication Disorders/Sensory Impairments. Past recipients of this award have been graduates from Avella, Washington, Beth-Center, Canon-McMillan, Trinity, and Frazier.
This year's recipient, Caity Baird, received services through the Intermediate Unit Itinerant Hearing Support Program. Through hard work and dedication, Caity has done well academically as an honor student and has performed as an active member of the marching band “Silks”. With her busy schedule, Caity has also found time to participate in numerous community service projects as well as various mission trips.
Caity has also received recognition as a “Kid with Character” in the May 2009 edition of “The Mainstream News” published by the Clarke School for the Deaf/Center for Oral Education.
In the fall, Caity will attend La Roche College as a student in the Speech Pathology and Audiology Program.
