Kids with Character

Caity Baird and Jonathan Vermilya, both seniors at Canon-McMillan High school and students in the IU1 hearing support program, received recognition as a “Kid with Character” in the May 2009 edition of “The Mainstream News”.

“The Mainstream News” is a newsletter published eight times each school year by the Clarke: School for the Deaf/Center for Oral Education.  Their newsletter addresses a broad range of issues related to mainstreaming students with hearing loss.  Each year they accept nominations and recognize deaf and hard of hearing students mainstreamed in public schools across the US.  A hearing loss, presents students in the mainstream with challenges every day. These students must demonstrate their strength of character as they face these challenges head on.  Caity and Jonathan do not let their hearing loss limit what they can accomplish or what they can contribute to their schools and communities.
