Lucia D. Scarvel Memorial Scholarship presented to Joey D'Auria

The Lucia D. Scarvel Memorial Scholarship was presented to Joey D'Auria at Frazier High School on May 28, 2008 during the Frazier High School Awards Day. This scholarship is presented annually in memory of Lucia Scarvel who spent nearly four decades in the field of education as a supervisor of speech and hearing with Intermediate Unit 1. The scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who has received services through Intermediate Unit 1's Department of Communication Disorders/Sensory Impairments. Past recipients of this award have been graduates from Avella, Washington, Beth-Center, Canon McMillan and Trinity.

This year's recipient, Joey D'Auria, from Laurel Highlands attended the IU1 classroom for students who are deaf/hard of hearing at Frazier High School. Through hard work and dedication, Joey has done well academically as a high honor student. He has maintained an active extracurricular schedule. Joey served as yearbook photographer. He persevered in athletics as a four-year member of the golf team where he received the extra effort spirit award. He also served as manager for the football team and participated in track and field for three years. In addition, Joey has found time to help others as a volunteer with Special Olympics.

Joey is also a member of the Fayette County Church basketball league and participated in the YMCA and Linden Hall Golf Leagues.

Joey also received The Challenge Program Awards, the D.A.R. Good Citizen Award, the Davis and Davis Scholar/Athlete Award and the Perfect Attendance Award for four years at the Frazier High School Awards Day.

Joey has been accepted at California University of Pennsylvania for the fall semester where he will enter the Golf Management Program.
