1998 Annie Sullivan Award Winner: Debra Humble

Intermediate Unit I teacher, Debra Humble, was honored as the first recipient of the Annie Sullivan Award. The award is named for the teacher of Helen Keller and recognizes an educator who goes beyond their required duties to facilitate acceptance of people with disabilities in school and community.

Mrs. Humble is employed as a Work Study Coordinator by Intermediate Unit I and has placed students with disabilities in work and community settings throughout Washington County. She often accompanies students to workstations in the evening and encourages students to accomplish tasks that to many seemed beyond their reach.

Students are currently placed at eight work sites including private businesses, churches, and public service organizations. Employers express amazement at the type of work students are able to do and their productivity while on the job.

Mrs. Humble has served on the Board of the Supported Employment Services of Washington County and Transitional Employment Consultants. In 1993 she was the recipient of the Working Women's Outstanding Achievement Award presented by the Professional Business Women of Washington County.

Mr. Samuel J. Craighead, Executive Director of Intermediate Unit I, stated "It is wonderful to have such a truly deserving recipient for the initial Annie Sullivan Award presented by the Intermediate Unit."
